As a Hispanic, I’ve realized that we don’t really go out to find niche music. We listen to songs with people who are trending at the moment; whether it be through the radio, TikTok, Instagram, we often stick with what’s popular. Personally, I’m not the type of person to seek out underrated music either. A couple years ago, though, some Hispanic artists made their way onto my feed, and I believe they deserve some more recognition.
C-Kan is a Mexican rap artist. He was born in Guadalajara, Mexico and is known for his impact on Spanish hip-hop. He’s considered one of the artists who represent rap the best. His songs reflect struggle and resilience in the barrios. One of his strongest songs is called “Un par de balas,” which exemplifies thug life, using vivid lyrics to portray violence and harsh realities of street violence he himself has witnessed, solidifying his reputation as a powerful voice within niche Hispanic rap scenes.
Bizarrap is an Argentinian music producer and songwriter. He makes music such as Latin Trap, EDM, and Hip Hop, often collaborating with featured artists for his famous ‘Bizzarap sessions.’ He began gaining traction in 2023 when he collaborated with Shakira. Their song doesn’t have an official title, it’s just named “SHAKIRA || BZRP Music Session # 53/66.” The beat of the song is very rhythmic and it’s the type of beat you want to jump up and down to. The lyrics just take hits at her ex Pique and his girlfriend Clara. Famous lyrics included, “Yo solo hago música, perdon que te sal-pique,” and “Tiene nombre de persona buena, Clara-mente no es como suena,” a play of words on their name. His lyricism and unique production is on par with some of the most popular artists in the genre, but he is yet to reach the popularity he deserves.
Tornillo has been in the music industry for over 15 years now. His main genre of music is Mexican Rap. I discovered his music when my cousin began dating this one guy who is really into Spanish rap music. Tornillo and another artist, Santa Fe Klan, joined Canelo Alvarez in his ring walk, before a match with Jermell Charlo on September 30 2023. The duo performed “Por Mi Mexico,” to ignite pride in their country. My favorite song is called, “Camuflaje.” It is a collaboration between him, Zxymr, and La Loquera released as a single in 2024. The song is about a woman he likes to mess around with but she paints herself as a saint, camouflaging how she actually is.
Samantha Barrón is a Mexican R&B and Latino soul artist. She has a beautiful, enchanting voice, and paired with her passionate lyrics, her songs are distinctive and powerful. I have only listened to a couple of her songs through an Ex that dedicated songs to me. My favorite song from her is “Dibujame,” a collaboration with Nanpa Basico and Rich Vagos. It conveys two individuals with a profound and intense connection symbolized by them painting and drawing each other. She is a profound and intricate artist that captivates her audience with her fascinating songs.
Another R&B and Soul artist is named Jason Joshua. He was born in Puerto Rico, but was raised in Florida. His parents are from a background of Chicago. Jason’s diverse upbringing influences his unique musical style. I found his song “La Vida Es Fria” on TikTok and I instantly fell in love with it. The song is about feeling distant and cold about the world and the relationships in it. Joshua is almost reminiscing about lost love. He believes that having love can be a beautiful thing, but it just is not worth it if people don’t put the effort in. It’s a pretty popular song. His songs are usually laid back and soothing. Some of his songs are even in English.
Hispanic artists are all talented, authentic, and most represent their culture. Check these artists out if you feel like you would enjoy their music!
