With Halloween coming up, the Wingspan editors want to give their top picks of Horror movies and shows. These are the editors’ favorite horror media.
Abigail Carsner- “Eraserhead”
If there were one word to describe this movie it would be surreal. Now, a warning before you go into this movie; it is a hard one to sit through and you may need to watch some of David Lynch’s other projects before heading into this one. Eraserhead is a black-and-white movie about unwanted pregnancies and the fear of fatherhood. (Think of it as Rosemary’s Baby but for fathers rather than mothers.) This movie isn’t scary in the sense that it has jumpscares but rather the complete strangeness of it. If you have seen any of Lynch’s other works, you’ll know what I am talking about. It is a good movie if you’re a film buff, but it is not a good movie to start off with if you want to get into the genre.
Dominic Carsner – “Emesis Blue”
The film is about a detective and soldier left adrift from war investigating the Governor of New Mexico, Jules Archibald’s, kidnapping. They have no idea what is in store for them, as they get stuck in their worst nightmare. Being the longest animation ever made on Source Filmmaker, It is a masterpiece in how well-animated it is. The animation style deceives the viewer with how it is quite cartoony. The movie takes heavy inspiration from Team Fortress 2, And Stephen King’s “The Jaunt” for many of the plot points and characters. Its good use of non-linear storytelling, allows viewers to be on their heels for what happens next. Besides, It’s eternity in there.
Evelyn Evangelista Andrade-” Tim Burton’s Corpse’s Bride”
Corpse Bride is a beautiful stop-motion animation film that represents setting something free if you genuinely love it. This isn’t your typical horror film but it does have the gothic aspects related to Halloween and tells them in a beautiful tragic way. The story is about Victor having an arranged marriage to Victoria, a girl he likes. Although they might like each other, Victor’s still nervous about the ceremony. He then runs off to the woods, to practice his vows, but upon doing this he wakes up Emily, a deceased bride who got murdered on the day of her wedding, and now wants to marry Victor in the underworld, while Victor has to make it back to the living world before Victoria gets betrothed to another.
Clare Ely – “Death Note (デスノート)”
“Death Note (デスノート)” is a 2000s thriller anime following an apathetic and narcissistic high school prodigy, Light Yagami. One day he finds the Death Note, a book granting him the ability to murder whoever he wants, however he wants, whenever he wants, under the condition that he knows their real name and matching face. The more he kills the more media attention his case gets, news dubbing him “Kira”, a phonetic translation of killer. A mysterious detective, known as L, is called to solve the murders, with his prime suspect being Light. Light vows to kill L and L vows to prove who Light really is. Several characters put dents in either of their plans including; Misa Amane, another Death Note user who’s in love with Light, Rem and Ryuk, omnipresent spirits attached to the books, Naomi, the widow of a Kira victim, and Matsuda, a policeman assigned to the case. The series follows the paranoid cat-and-mouse game of Light and L, the closer they get to each other and the further their case unfolds.
Kerrah Dunkley- “The Deliverance”
