NAHS Students Get Real About the Election

More stories from Jessica Yates

Just a few days before the 2016 presidential election, The Wingspan interviewed 3 Democratic students, Madison Smith-Collins, Randee Wismer, and Kenon Williams, on their thoughts of the turnout of the election. They were then interviewed again post election to gather their opinions on the new President-Elect, Donald Trump, and his overall performance as America’s new Poster “child”.

Pre Election: When asked why Hillary is the better candidate, Randee Wismer (RW) states that it is because “Hillary is not sexist or racist and actually has plans”, while Kenon Williams (KW) and Madison Smith-Collins (MC) both express that Hillary has more experience than Trump and even go further to state that “he’s not relatable and only cares for the upper class”.

The trio agree that Hillary is the lesser evil one in this case, but is not the best choice in the whole presidential election. All three students said that Bernie Sanders originally had their vote. Both Williams, Collins, and their families are all Democrats. However, Wismer and her family do not see eye to eye with politics, which is surprising since kids usually tend to stick with their parents on their political views. Wismer jokes, “During the Thanksgiving parade, when they had the black lives matter protest that stopped the big parade, I got in a huge fight with my uncle about it, and my dad told me to never talk about politics again.” During our nation’s worst presidential debates, Wismer states that Hillary did better because “she just stayed calm. That’s what I want my president to be, calm even during the biggest pressure.”

Collins adds that “Donald Trump. Every time he was asked a question, he avoided to answer it”, and Wismer states that “[Clinton] was respectful to the prompters, and abided by the rules and was respectful to her candidate- well, sometimes.”

Wismer, Collins, and Williams all agree that “your vote matters” and “if you can vote, vote because your opinion matters and if you don’t, you’re allowing the person you don’t want to win, win”.
