Groundhog’s Day

Bailey Schulte, Correspondence Manager

As weird as it sounds, here in the United States, Groundhog Day is one of the most popular days of the year and Punxsutawney Phil is the star. Phil lives in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, and resides in Gobbler’s Knob. The first official trek here was made in 1887, and has become a widely spread tradition here in the United States ever since. On February 2nd of every year, the famous Punxsutawney Phil either comes out of his hole willingly, or he is brought out by his handlers to determine whether or not there will be six more weeks of winter. It is said that if Phil comes out and sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter and he returns to his hole. If he doesn’t see his shadow, however, the groundhog stays about, as it is an omen that spring is coming early. On February 2, 2015, Phil has proclaimed there to be six more weeks of winter weather, so don’t put away those hats and scarves just yet!
