There has been much debate which dollar bill Harriet Tubman will be placed on and how to incorporate her. This led to the Treasury Secretary, Jacob J. Lew, to announce that Tubman will replace former president Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill and also redesign the $5, $10, $20. Each of these will incorporate more of a female presence. There will also be an additional feature to updated bills, including a tactile feature to aid the blind.

These bills are expected to come into circulation as of 2020, although it isn’t set in stone, just in time for the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment which granted women the right to vote. On the back of the $10 there will be a collection of women involved in the women’s suffrage movement: Lucretia Mott, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Alice Paul. As for the $5, the back will feature Marian Anderson and Eleanor Roosevelt who held events at the lincoln memorial.

The reason for choosing Harriet Tubman was because she struck a chord with people in all parts of the country, of all ages. This changing of the bill is a part of the Women on 20’s movement. According to Independent Journal, “We believe this simple, symbolic and long-overdue change could be an important stepping stone for other initiatives promoting gender equality”. This changing of the $20 bill will be a new evolution of American currency.
