Fear of the Walking Dead VS The Walking Dead

With the season finale of Fear of Walking Dead and The Walking Dead premiere coming up, many are exploring the differences  between the two shows. Fear of the Walking Dead takes a more modern twist on the show, while it exposes the breaking down of the government and how different people react to the rapid changes to society. In contrast, The Walking Dead it shows a post-apocalyptic world, as the group of survivors struggle to find resources and trust others. The main difference between the two shows is the different time periods.

Based on the ratings and viewers opinions, The Walking Dead is doing better. The Fear of the Walking Dead has lost over 2 millions views within the second episode. As of the most recent episode, they have lost over 4 millions views, leaving them at 6 million views for each episode.

So, what’s the main problem with the Fear of the Walking Dead? Some say it is the characters. The characters in the Fear of the Walking Dead are often called boring, futile, and ludicrous. They make poor choices and struggle to realize what is happening.  Furthermore, the viewers don’t get to see much internal conflict or emotion between the characters. Most of the time the characters have pointless dialogue, which is another central problem of the show. With The Walking Dead, fans were used to seeing the group get stronger and fight more. Even in “peaceful times”, there were still many issues that each character had.

The Fear of the Walking Dead, seems to lack a sense of urgency as well.  Most of the time the show seems slow paced and much of the drama seems contrived. Many scenes feel like “filler” and it often feels like the show is wasting time between more intense plot points. Even though The Walking Dead had its fillers, every filler was enjoyable and would often lead to something else. When the The Walking Dead comes back the contrast between the he two shows will be stark.  The Fear of the Walking Dead season finale is on Sunday, October 4th and the season premiere of  The Walking Dead is on Sunday, October 11th so viewers and critics alike will definitely be sizing up and comparing the two.
