Professional and composed, Michael Flynn’s approach is unwaveringly graceful, but underneath the mature tone and demeanor, Flynn possesses a ‘punk rock’ spirit in his soul. Long black hair, a guitar and bass player, and a lover of the Rock genre. Flynn has a gothic edge that may surprise those who only know him in passing.
Though Flynn prefers the quiet, rock and performing are the loud spaces where he thrives. His ability to listen to a song, identify its chords, and then play it back on guitar makes his love for music seem more like a gift. Although the work he puts into his music is evident, the passion viscerally bleeds through his art, and his intention to make his music rather than himself memorable is an admirable quality that he possesses.
“I want something memorable on the stage right here,” Flynn said. “When the people are lining up on the seats, I want them to be able to see me perform, and I want them to think of that performance, even if I don’t even place in the top three.”
When Flynn was on stage at Expressive Path, he gave it his all, putting as much of himself into his performance as possible. He feels the music and makes it a part of himself when he performs.
“I just got performing from how I act when I listen to music,” Flynn said. “I can put that into performing, and that’s how I can perform well, and how I can have a stage presence.”
Flynn is a person who values putting his attention into what he is doing. He is present while having a stage presence and he wishes others would feel present the same way.
“You lose focus really quickly,” he said. “And, also, it’s kind of rude to pull out your phone when people are watching. Like, if I’m performing, I wouldn’t want to see you pulling out your phone for no reason other than recording.”
Now, it’s not as if Flynn is some overly passionate person about phones being the problem of today’s society or anything along those lines, but he has not had a phone for over a year.
“I just go with the flow,” Flynn said.
As if he couldn’t get punk enough, he listens to his music through physical media. He collects CD’s and vinyls, a hobby he leaned into after going through his sister’s CD compartment. What was the first song he picked up in the piles of music? “Currents” by Tame Impala.
He also has a knack for writing his own songs, writing whatever feels right to him.
“It has to feel good, simple as that. Whatever it is, it has to spark,’” Flynn said.
What can be said about Micheal Flynn for sure is that he is self-assured, and into his assuredness, there is a quiet confidence that makes his music so intrinsically him.
