Norristown JROTC Helps an Elderly Couple after Car Crash
March 18, 2016
On March 1st, two teens attending Norristown Area High School became local heroes after saving an elderly couple that was in a car accident. The two seniors, Micheal Smith and Brendan Fitzpatrick, members of the Eagles Battalion JROTC, were the ones who saved an elderly couple who lost control of their car. An interview with Smith revealed that the two were headed to Wawa when the two discovered the vehicle on Whitehall road. The two then got out of their vehicle and got to work. They broke the windshield to be able to remove the couple from the vehicle first pulling out the lady and moving her about 10 feet away in case of implications with the car. Next, the two carefully maneuvered the man out as he had had his arm stuck underneath the wheel. Shortly after paramedics arrived. Their training surely helped them with the successful rescue.
Their heroism did not go unnoticed as Sergeant First Class (retired) Gene Chieffo will submit the two students for the Medal of Heroism, a US Army Cadet Command Award. They will be recognized during a ceremony held at the school.
Some advice that would be passed along on to others, should they ever be in a situation like this is to stay calm and call 911.
