The Federal Government Strengthens Safeguards for Animals

Francesca DiSante, Staff Reporter

The site, pet-abuse.com was founded in 2001. This website informs people on animal cruelty, lists states that acknowledge animal cruelty laws, and gives access to an animal abuse database. It also allows people to report abuse and tells how to prevent abuse to their own animals. This is the first searchable database made for animal cruelty on the internet. Many people do not take very good care of their animals, forgetting that their lives matter too and so now there is a way to be informed and protect them. There are readable records on the stories of thousands of abused animals. It tells the location, date, and status of the crime and the name of the convict. Names can even be searched for particular cases. To make sure one’s animals are safe and not in danger, this website is a very resourceful tool to browse for abusers and cases in the area.

In addition, a new state animal abuser registries was proposed in 2015. The bill is very useful, helping keep innocent animals away from abusers. People putting pets up for adoption, such as shelters and pet stores, must check this database to ensure they are not selling their animals to offenders. The FBI is now also involved in preventing animal cruelty, the crime is now categorized as a Class-A felony. Jail time could be faced for this. It is believed that killing animals could eventually lead to killing humans since several studies have shown that animal cruelty and serial killers are linked. The collection of data has recently started in 2016 and will continue. Hopefully there will be less cases on animal abuse and we will get more justice for their deaths instead of just ignoring it. They are not just pets, they are animals with feelings and lives just like us. Keep your animals safe!
