Thanksgiving Instills a Special Tradition

Tea Warren, Staff Reporter

Thanksgiving is truly a special day. It was first celebrated in 1621 when the pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians shared a fall harvest (History.com). Thanksgiving in the United Sates is held on the fourth Thursday in November. Canada too has a national day of Thanksgiving which occurs on the second Monday in October.  Thanksgiving day is more than just fond memories, parades, football and special dinners commemorating the amicable relationship developed between the Wampanoag tribe and Early Americans. It is important to remember that the word “thanksgiving” is composed of two words thanks and giving. In my family, this is emphasized through a sharing ritual I’ve known since I was little. On Thanksgiving Day we are reminded of the bounty of treasures that is a part of our lives. Therefore, prior to sitting down to our feast, we spend a few moments before thanksgiving dinner to give thanks for the richness of our lives and for our wonderful family and friends.  With the span of three generations standing in unity, thanks for a small toy to the gift health all share openly that for which they are most grateful.  Even our cousins who are deaf participate with all of us as their mother translates what they have to say.  This tradition gives us pause and helps our family to continue instilling a sense of appreciation among all of us.
