High School Football Player Dies

Andre Smith, 17, a senior at Bogan High School in Chicago, Illinois, died because of a football injury. He reportedly died of “blunt force head injuries due to a football accident”, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. He was said to have hit his head in the final play of the game and walk off the field, but later collapsed. Andre is the seventh person this year to die due to a high school football related injury. In 2014 there were 11 deaths because of high school football; Five of them directly stemmed to the sport such as head or spine injuries. The other six died of indirect causes: 3 were heart related, 2 of hypernatremia, and 1 of water intoxication. According to Bogan’s official school website there was a memorial held on October 29 for Andre. Also, some students and alumni are using the hashtag #2Dre2016 in honor of Andre.
