A Hero to Many
April 1, 2015
While many were snowed in around the city, a Philadelphia Officer was fighting for his life. In early March, 30 year old Officer Robert Wilson was shot multiple times during an attempted robbery at GameStop, located at 21st and Lehigh Street in Philadelphia. Wilson’s only intentions were to reward his son and get him a gift for his 10th birthday. Wilson had been standing at the counter across from employees at the GameStop store when two brothers, Carlton Hipps and Ramone Williams, walked in carrying guns the police stated. Williams and Hipps didn’t notice the police car outside, where Wilson’s partner Damien Stevenson sat. Nor did they notice Wilson, who was in uniform. The officer confronted the men and gun shots were fired throughout the store.
Wilson stepped away from the bystanders during the shootout. He was shot multiple times. Never giving up the battle, he shot at the criminals until he was fatally wounded in the h ead.
When the suspects realized Wilson was down they tried to flee. After the two were able to get outside, their attempt to escape was interrupted by Officer Stevenson. The officer wounded Hipps in the leg, and Williams ran back inside the store. While trying to blend in with the customers, Williams was arrested and later confessed. Both brothers have been charged with Wilson’s murder and with attempted murder of Stevenson.
