Spaced Out: Being Paid to Sleep

Spaced Out: Being Paid to Sleep

Sterling Williams, Co-Business Manager

As the lull of the regular school day dies down, it is typical of students to want to slumber during instructional time. This is not a foreign concept, as large groups of students are known to sleep consistently in class. It is glorified throughout the media, as students are always caught sleeping. This is something that can definitely entice those that choose the letter “Z” over getting an “A”. What if there was a way for people to get paid for sleeping? What if, finally, students were able to be compensated for their copious amounts of sleep? For the first time ever, the world-renowned NASA program finally has an answer for those that want to get paid to sleep.

According to rt.com, the Russian Television network website “NASA is willing to shell out five grand a month to allow a few fortunate loafers to live out their dream… all for the sake of science.” This means that, just to sleep, people are now able to be paid for it. From personal experience, that is way more money than I make as a cashier, and I have to be awake and on my A-game at work. The dynamic behind this is that you are able to be paid to sleep, but for a very long time. According to this same website, you must be willing to lounge for 70 days. It also states that you are not allowed to get out of bed during this time period, but you are allowed to keep up on social media, take classes online, but overall do as little as possible during this sleep. The only time remote physical activity is allotted is when NASA runs, “tests of your bone, muscle, heart and circulatory systems, and nervous systems, as well as your nutritional condition and your ability to fight off infections.”, once again according to rt.com. However, the time is not completely sedentary. Subjects will be allowed to exercise, but only on specially designed equipment.

NASA-will-pay-you-18000-to-stay-in-bed-for-70-straight-daysThis may sound simple, but a series of tests must take place in order to make the cut for this well-compensated slumber. You have to be a healthy individual, you must undergo intense physical and mental therapy, and you must be mentally willing to spend an extended period of time sleeping, and not being able to do a lot of things for a very long time. Obviously, this occupation is not for the faint of heart. Besides the 70 day option, there are options for fewer days for less money. Either way, the compensation seems very generous and favorable. This is something that those not equipped for 70 days could take into consideration.

For students that seem to be openly willing to slumber all of the time, this seems like a great option for them. However, the intense physical and mental training that people must endure to participate might not let students make the cut. It is a great option, but it is something that the for which the participant must be prepared. Although it may not be suitable for the general masses, it is definitely a quick way to make a lot of money, and it’s a job that allows for plenty of leisure time. For those who like to sleep, this is something to consider.
